7
Q

How is crude oil separated into fractions

A

Crude oil is heated to vaporize the different hydrocarbons in a tank which is cool at the top and hot at the bottom. The vapours then rise and the different hydrocarbons condense at their specific boiling points, allowing them to be separated.

16
Q

How to differentiate alkanes and alkenes (practically)

A

Mix with bromine water

17
Q

Why do alkenes decolour bromine water

A

The double bond breaks and bromine atoms attach to each carbon atom

18
Q

How is acid rain formed

A

Fuels containing sulfur impurities react with oxygen
Forms sulfur dioxide, which makes acid rain when release
