3
Q

Why are we able to separate the hydrocarbons in crude oil?

A

Because the different hydrocarbons aren’t chemically bonded together so they retain their individual characteristics.

4
Q

Describe fractional distillation.

A

Crude oil is heated to a gas and then enters the bottom of a fractioning column. The column has a temperature gradient running through it - it’s hottest at the bottom and gets cooler further up. The gas rises and different hydrocarbons in it condense at different temperatures. These are known as fractions and are collected.

8
Q

What does saturated mean?

A

13
Q

How is carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere?

A

When we burn fossil fuels for energy, carbon and hydrogen are released. They mix with oxygen in the air to produce carbon dioxide and water vapour.

16
Q

How is acid rain formed?

A

Sulphur dioxide from burning fuel mixes with clouds to form dilute sulphuric acid.

17
Q

What are the consequences of acid rain?

A
  • Lakes become acidic
  • Poisons wildlife
  • Ruins buildings and statues
18
Q

What are two methods of reducing the amount of acid rain?

A
  • Removing sulphur from fuels before burning them. This takes a lot of energy.
  • Remove sulphur dioxide from waste gases using an acid gas scrubber.
19
Q

What is global dimming?

A

When soot and ash are released into the atmosphere and reflect light back into space.

20
Q

How much darker is the Earth now than it was 50 years ago?

A

Up to 25%

21
Q

Why do some scientists not believe in global dimming?

A

They believe that the evidence is due to inaccurate equipment.

22
Q

How is bioethanol produced?

A

By fermenting plants.

23
Q

What is a use of bioethanol?

A

Powering some cars.

24
Q

What are three advantages of bioethanol?

A
  • It is carbon neutral
  • It is renewable
  • Growing plants means employment
25
Q

What are three disadvantages of bioethanol?

A
  • Using bioethanol requires special engine
  • Isn’t widely available
  • Concerns that if more farmers grow crops for bioethanol, food prices could rise
26
Q

What is biodiesel made of?

A

Vegetable oils like rapeseed and soybean.

27
Q

What is a use of biodiesel?

A

Being mixed with diesel and then being used in a Diesel engine.

28
Q

What are three advantages of biodiesel?

A
  • Carbon neutral
  • Can be used in a normal engine
  • Fewer particulates
29
Q

What are three disadvantages of biodiesel?

A
  • Cannot replace diesel
  • Very expensive
  • Could increase food prices
30
Q

What are two advantages of using hydrogen gas as a fuel?

A
  • Very clean

* Comes from water so won’t run out any time soon

31
Q

What are three disadvantages of using hydrogen gas as a fuel?

A
  • Requires a special engine
  • Isn’t widely available
  • Hard to store as it is very flammable
