Crude Oil and Fuels Flashcards
What is crude oil?
A mixture of different chemical compounds
Why do we have to separate the substances in crude oil?
Because all the substances have different boiling points
What is separating the substances in crude oil called?
Fractional distillation
What are the compounds containing only hydrogen and carbons called?
hydrocarbons
Are hydrocarbons alkanes or alkenes?
Alkanes
Name these alkene molecules:
CH4 C2H6 C3H8 C4H10 C5H12
Methane Ethane Propane Butane Pentane
If alkanes contain as many hydrogen atoms as possible in each molecule what do we call them?
Saturated hydrocarbons
Are hydrocarbons very flammable?
yes
What is the general formula for alkanes?
2n + 2
Would a long hydrocarbon chain have a higher boiling or lower boiling point?
Higher boiling point
Would a long hydrocarbon chain have a runny or thick viscosity?
Thick
Explain the steps involved in the fractional distillation
- Crude oil is fed at the bottom of a tall tower
- The temperature decreases going up the column
- Hydrocarbons with smaller chains found near the top
In crude oil are the hydrocarbons saturated or unsaturated?
Saturated
