Cracking hydrocarbons Flashcards
What is cracking?
Breaking down large hydrocarbon molecule chains into smaller useful ones
What are the three steps for cracking?
- Heat the hydrocarbons at a high temp
2. Mix with steam or pass over a hot catalyst
What test can we react products with to test for saturation?
Bromine water test
If the test is positive what colour does the water go?
Colourless
If the test is negative what colour does the water go?
Orange
Is positive alkanes or alkenes?
alkenes
Cracking is an example of…?
Thermal decomposition
What are plastics made from?
Monomers and polymers
Explain polymerisation
- Double bond opens up
2. Replaced by single bonds and lots of monomers join up
Many polymers are not biodegradable. What does this mean?
They do not get broken down by microbes (problems with waste disposal)
What two things are plastic bags made of?
Polymers and cornstarch
What is the reaction for ethanol fermentation with yeast?
Sugar + yeast ——-> Carbon dioxide + ethanol
What % of ethanol is made this way?
80%
Give two cons about fermentation?
- Gives of CO2
- Takes longer to produce
What is the reaction for a hydration reaction?
Ethene + steam ——> Ethanol
