Crude Oil Flashcards
What is a mixture?
Two elements or compounds which are not bonded so they keep their original propities
What is crude oil?
A mixture of compounds mainly hydrocarbons
What are hydrocarbons?
Fuels like petrol and diseal
How can a mixture be separated?
Fractional distillation
How does fractional distillation work?
Heated crude oil is entered at the bottom and vaporised oil rises and at each level different gases are released where they condnce
What is crude oil made of?
Hydrocarbons called alkanes
What are alkanes made from?
Carbon atoms and surrounded by hydrogen atoms
What are examples of alkanes?
Methane, ethane, propane and butane
What is the equation for alkanes?
Can h2n + 2
What happens the shorter the molecules?
The more runny, turn to a gas at a lower temp (fractional distillation), lower boiling point and more flammable
Crude oil burns easy so…
Make good fuels and central heating systems in homes
What are good things about crude oil?
Cheap and reliable
Why won’t oil run out today?
Because we have new technology which makes it easier to extract oil That might of been to hard or expensive to extract
What is a alternate to crude oil?
Renewable sources like wind power
What is the equation for alkanes?
Cn h2n +2
