Q

What is the function for Naphtha?

A

Feedstock for the petrochemical industry

Naphtha is used as feedstock for pyrolysis (NCC) to produce ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene and xylene that are basic feedstock for petrochemistry

Q

How is crude oil sepreated via. Fractional distillation?

A
  1. Crude oil is heated in a furnace and turns into vapour which enters the fractionating column.
  2. The hot vapour rises up the column and cools down and each fraction condenses at a different temperatures.
  3. The fraction with the lowest boiling point is at the top and the fraction with the highest boiling point is at the bottom.

15
Q

Why does the boiling point increase?

A
  1. The size of the molecules increase.
  2. Which causes the IMFA (intermolecular forces of attraction) to increase.
  3. Hence, more energy is needed to overcome the IMFA.

16
Q

Why does the thickness increases?

A
  1. The size of the molecules increase.
  2. The IMFA increases.
  3. Thus the forces are dificult to overcome.
  4. Larger Hyrdrocarbons do not flow easily.
17
Q

Why does the flammability decrease?

A

Due to the percentage by mass of carbon increasing this causes the hydrocarbons to be less Flammable.
