Air and Atmosphere Flashcards
What is the composition of air?
78% Nitrogen,
21% oxygen
0.93% Argon
Less than 0.04% Carbon Dioxide, Nobel Gases
and Water Vapour
What are the sources of Carbon monoxide?
Incomplete Combustion of Carbon-containing Substances
Incomplete combustion meaning not enough Oxygen
What effect does Carbon Monoxide have on the health?
Carbon dioxide combines with the Hameoglobin, which prevents red blood cells from absorbing oxygen which can lead to death.
What are the sources of Nitrogen Oxides (NO and NO2)?
- Lightining actvity
- Cars (at high temps nitrogen and oxygen from yhe air combines to form Nitrogen oxides)
What effects does Nitrogen oxidies have on the health and enviroment?
irritate and damage lungs which causes breathning difficulty.
Forms Acid rain which kills marine life and corrodes buidlings
What are the sources of Sulfur dioxide?
Volacanoes (contain Sulfur)
Combustion of fossil fuels (contains Sulfur)
What are the effects that Sulfor dioxide have on the health and the enviroment?
It irrates eyes and causes breathing problems
Causes acird rain whihc kills marine life and corroeds buidlings
