Crude Oil Flashcards
What is crude oil?
Complex mixture of hydrocarbons formed over millions of years
How was crude oil formed?
From remains of small sea animals millions of years ago, under the effect of heat and pressure (no oxygen)
What are hydrocarbons made up of
Hydrogen and carbon
What process is crude oil separated by
Fractional distillation
What do fractions contain
Mixtures containing hydrocarbon compounds that have similar boiling points and similar chain lengths
What is crude oil a mixture of?
Compounds
How do we separate crude oil
Boiling them
What are the fractions of crude oil
Petrol and bitumen
What do the longer chains mean
Less flammable, higher boiling point , less ability to flow
Where do the fractions with high boiling points condense at
The bottom
Where do the fractions with low boiling points condense at
The top
What are the impacts of oil
Power stations spoil countryside, oil spillages can damage tourist and fishing industries, burning it can cause global warming and acid rain
What are alkenes
They are reactive because they are unsaturated and have double bond
What is the formula for methane
CH4
what is the chemical formula for Butane?
C₄H₁₀
