CRP001 (WEED SCIENCE) Flashcards
A body of knowledge that primarily focuses on the study of weeds and their control. It is also defined as an integrative, applied scientific discipline typical of most other pest management and production-oriented disciplines of modern agriculture.
Weed Science
Main Goal of Weed Science
the formulation of the most effective, economical, and satisfactory methods of controlling weeds.
- a plant out of place and not intentionally sown
- a plant growing where it is not wanted
- a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered
- a plant that is competitive, persistent, pernicious, and interfere negatively with human
activity
Weed
weeds were not recognized as pests because of the following reasons:
- their damage is not as visible as those by insects and diseases
- seldom results to total crop failure
- crops and weeds are always associated together
familiarize all of the characteristics of weeds.
- Weeds exhibit fast seedling growth and early reproductive ability.
- They mature quickly or spend a short time in the vegetative stage.
- Weeds are adaptable and can thrive in various environmental conditions due to their high environmental plasticity.
- Weed seeds have various strategies to delay germination and ensure survival in favorable conditions.
- Weeds produce seeds similar in size and shape to crop seeds, making them hard to separate and easy to disperse by humans.
- Each weed generation can produce abundant seeds under diverse environmental conditions.
- Weeds possess strong competitive abilities for nutrients, light, and water, employing special tactics such as rosette formation, climbing, and allelopathy.
GIVE THE GENERAL CLASSIFICATIONS OF WEEDS
a. Noxious Weeds
b. Common Weeds
General classification of weeds where plants having undesirable characteristics that can resist control
practices.
