What is critical incident stress?
Any situation faced by first responders that may cause unusually strong emotional reactions which have the potential to interfere with the ability to function at the scene or later
Three types of stress?
Eustress- good
Distress-bad
Chronic/acute- ongoing or extreme
Cumulative stress?
A chronic state of disturbing stress which can lead to physical and emotional illness over time
PTSD?
Psychological disorder affecting individuals who experienced or witness traumatic events
Secondary trauma?
Further negative emotional experiences may occur
What additional distressors?
Shift work
Liability issues
Court system
Excessive paperwork

Physical

Time
Auditory
Visual
How much should you increase exercise after a critical incident?
2-3x
How much sleep is recommended by the experts?
7-9 hours uninterrupted
