Sutherland defines white collar crime as ‘a crime committed by a person of respectability and high status in the course of his occupation’
Sutherlands aim was to challenge the stereotype that crime is purely just wc.

Covers a wide range of acts including
- financial crime - tax evasion
- crime against consumers- selling unfit goods
- crime against employees- violation of wage laws- discrimination
Explanation for corporate crime
Strain theory- when opportunities to reach goal of material wealth by legal means are blocked-turn to crime-Metin used this for wc but others have used it for corporate crime.
Box- corporate crime
Argues that if companies can’t achieve its goal of profit by legal means it may mean they turn to illegal ones instead
Labelling theory -cicourel -corporate crime
He shows that middle class are more able to negotiate non- criminal labels for their behaviours Unlike the poor businesses often have power to avoid being labelled- afford expensive lawyers
