large sample of UK, high response rate - accurate response from a large population - includes unreported crime too. helps show DFC
doesnt include all crimes - victimless / consensual crimes dont get reported eg corporate crime
validity
includes unrecorded crimes - may not have been reported by police or police failed to record
relies on memory, also social desirability effect
reliability
trends not affected by chances in recording practices
strengths
provides picture of victimisation

categorisation left to respondent which leads to inaccuracies

law enforcement benefits the ruling class and therefore statistics cannot be representative of the whole population

labelling rejects the view of accurate stats
more interested in the way statistics are socially constructed

statistics do not reflect the amount of crime against women
sexual attacks ect are not reported due to a range of factors
domestic violence is seen as a private matter
