Rehabilitation of offenders - encourages offenders responsibility and the understanding of the impact of their crimes creating guilt and empathy which prevents reoffending
Atonement for wrongdoings (retribution) - psychological atonement (feelings of guilt and remorse) or physical atonement (compensation such as community work).
