What are the aims of CBTp?
CBTp cannot cure schizophrenic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations but helps the patient understand and cope with them.
Empowers patients to feel more confident and be more independent –which may help negative symptoms.
What are the four components of CBTp?
Assessment
Engagement
Psychoeducation
Cognitive Strategies
What does assessment involve within CBTp?
The client and therapist meet for the first time and the client explains their symptoms and experience.
Goals and expectations from CBTp are set.
What does engagement involve within CBTp?
The therapist will develop a relationship with the client.
The therapist will empathise with the client’s perspective and feelings of distress.
The patient will discuss their current coping strategies with the therapist.
What does psychoeducation involve within CBTp?
The therapist normalises the experience of psychiatric symptoms offering alternative explanations for their symptoms which makes the patient feel less stigmatised.
Increases the client understanding of their symptoms and conditions.
