Crime - Methods of Modifying - Anger Management Flashcards
What does anger management aim to do?
Identify triggers of anger whilst learning techniques to positively self-regulate emotions to manage anger, not prevent it.
What is anger management a form of?
Cognitive Behavioural Treatment (CBT)
What are the short term aims of the use of anger management as CBT?
Reduce aggression in prisons
What are the long term aims of the use of anger management as CBT?
Reduce reoffending and promote rehabilitation
What did Novaco argue are the three aims of anger management programmes?
Cognitive Restructuring - self awareness
Regulation of Arousal - control of physiological state
Behavioural Strategies - problem solving
What are the three stages of anger management using the Stress Inoculation Model?
Conceptualisation
Skill Acquisition
Application Practice
Describe ‘Conceptualisation’ as a stage of the Stress Inoculation Model.
Offender reflects on past experience and previous patterns of anger and learns triggers. The therapist will help to break the automatic faulty response to anger and rationalise a response.
Describe ‘Skill Acquisition’ as a stage of the Stress Inoculation Model.
Offender is introduced to techniques and skills to deal with anger provoking situations using ‘stop and think’. Offender learns communication and relaxation techniques alongside.
Describe ‘Application Practice’ as a stage of the Stress Inoculation Model.
Offender is given the opportunity to role-play and practice their learnt skills and must be committed to the scenario to reach positive reinforcement.
Describe how research support can be used to support the effectiveness of anger management.
Novcado found a 75% increase in anger management within prisoners after completing an anger management course, showing that it is effective in reducing aggressive behaviour. However, Howler found contradicting research to suggest there is no significant difference between those who completed anger management, compared to those who didn’t, therefore more research should be done.
Describe how a holistic method can be used to support the effectiveness of anger management.
Anger management is based of several explanations of criminal behaviour, both cognitive and social. The Stress Inoculation Method - Conceptualisation (behavioural element) Skill Acquisition (cognitive element) and Practical Application (social element), therefore a more complete explanation.
Describe how attrition rates can be used to criticise the effectiveness of anger management.
Many offenders drop out due unwillingness to reflect on the past or to participate in general, therefore difficult to establish the effectiveness if participants do not complete the full course.
Describe how empowerment can be used to support the ethics of anger management.
Much like CBT, anger management requires a lot of work from the offender to reduce aggression, therefore progress can result in them feeling proud and empowered to continue.
Describe how valid consent can be used to criticise the ethics of anger management.
Many institutions require offenders to take part in an anger management course whilst in prison, without valid consent which raises ethical issues.
Describe a social implication of anger management.
Financial implications as the cost to train specialised therapists are high, and not accessible for all prisons, however the cost of recidivism in the UK is approximately £9.5 million per year therefore in the long term would be beneficial.
