What is the problem with defining green crime?
Many green crimes are legal, but do have harmful impacts on their environment.
What does South say about green crime?
2 types:
Primary - direct result of destruction of earth’s resources
Secondary - deliberate breaches of laws that look to prevent green crime
Give examples of primary green crime:
Air Pollution - urbanisation led to increase use of fossil fuels
Deforestation - cutting down of forests to use timber or make way for grazing and factories
2 types of secondary green crime:
Organised crime - illegal dumping of chemicals
Corporate crimes - outsourcing disposal of hazardous waste to third parties who dump this illegally
Types of organised crime:
Trafficking - drugs, people, counterfeit goods
Modern slavery - exploiting labour of individuals for the profit of organised crime

Cybercrime 0 hacking, phishing and identity fraud.

It over-represents murder and violent crimes

Not all individuals interpret the media in the same way.
Change in attitudes - More realistic interpretations of crime, corrupt police and criminals getting away with crimes.

How does surveillance affect crime?
Surveillance = common way of exercising control over individuals - can be both internal and external with many modifying their behaviour as they feel they are being watched

Physical punishment has been replaced by pyschological punishment.
What was the panopticon?
Circular prison where prisons all face guard tower - risoners regulate own behaviour and discipline as they felt like they were being watched
What is synoptic surveillance?
Individuals use smart phones and cameras to record crime - monitor each others behaviour
Evaluate surveillance techniques:
Assumes people’s behaviour is subject to rational thought processes
CCTV captures crime but does not act as a deterent.
Mass media can manipulate media and bury news that is harmful to the status quo.
