what is state Crime?
illegal or deviant activities perpetuated by, or with complicity of state agencies
what are the 2 main reasons state crime is so serious?
- the scale of the time
- the state is the source of law

262 million people were killed by government during the 20th century

Economic and political elites can bring death, disease + loss to tens of thousands
why does the state being a source of law make state crime so serious?
as the state has the power to make laws, it also has the power to conceal its crimes, evade punishment and avoid defining its own actions criminal
what is genocide?
acts committed with intent to destroy in whole or in part of a national, ethnic, racial or religious group
what is state-corporate crime?
state crimes committed in conjunction with corporate crimes
what’s an example of state-initiated corporate crime?
‘Challenger space shuttle disaster’
challenger had risky + cost-cutting decisions made by state agencies + corporate companies which led to an explosion that killed 7 astronauts
what’s an example of state-facilitated corporate crime?
‘Deepwater horizon oil rig disaster’
in the Gulf of Mexico. the rig exploded + sank killing 11 workers
this was when states fail to regulate + control corporate behaviour making crime easier
