Why do we punish people?

A

To teach them a lesson
Protection - to keep others safe
Retribution - revenge (death penalty)
Deterrence - Put you off (cut off hand)
Reformation - Change them (counselling, community service)
Vindication - teach others to respect laws (public punishment
Reparation - repayment (fine, community service)

Fine:
You pay money for the crime
Put you off from doing it again
You loose money

Parole:
You are released to a parole officer
Gives you more freedom and a chance to show you aren’t that bad
If you break the rules, more punishment

What is Life Imprisonment?

A

You are jailed in prison for more than 15 years

What is a Parole?

A

A prisoner serves a majority of sentence/criminals who have served over 15 years have their cases received by home secretary where they decide whether to release a prisoner or not

A

This chosen by Parole. The prisoner is released from prison early because of a political reason or they are seen as a low risk from society

What is Capital Punishment?

A

The execution of a person by a state as a punishment for crime they have committed

Why is capital punishment used?

A

Some people commit crimes that aren’t worth living for

They keep committing the same crime after they have been warned

It protects society from murderers as som people believe that life imprisonment isn’t enough as a punishment for some crimes and many countries still use this form of punishment today

What is the religious viewpoint on capital punishment?

A

Christians argue both for and against using capital punishment but Christians mostly liked the idea and supported it by saying God had written it in the Bible. ‘Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed’
