What are the aims of sentencing according to the Criminal Justice Act 2003?
The punishment of offenders, crime reduction, rehabilitation, protection of the public, reparation of the victim
A life sentence is given out for what types of crimes?
Serious ones such as murder
What is the difference between a mandatory and discretionary life sentence?
Mandatory is compulsory for that crime. Discretionary is up to the judge depending on the severity of that crime (rape)
What does a suspended sentence mean?
It means that the offender does not go straight to prison
What is the problem with longer sentences being given out by the courts?
Overcrowding in prisons
Give a reason why prison is not seen as a deterrent
The offender may not be capable of rational thought- mental health issues
What percentage of prisoners work outside of the prison on training programmes?
0.5%
What are some of the requirements for a community sentence?
supervision, unpaid work, curfew, live in supervised conditions, group programmes and treatment
What percentage of offenders re-offend within 12 months of starting a community sentence?
34%
What were the percentage of community orders given out between 2007 and 2020?
From 14% to just 7%
What is the difference between a conditional and an unconditional discharge?
No punishment as long as no further offences take place. Unconditional means there are no punishments at all
