Punishment used to reform or change offending behaviour

Which theories connect with the concept of rehabilitation?
Individualistic theories such as cognitive theory, Eysenck’s personality theory and Skinner’s operant learning theory
What is meant by the word deterrent?
To deter an individual from re offending
What is the key difference between severity and certainty?
Severity is how harsh the punishment is, and certainty is the likelihood of getting caught for the crime
What theory does deterrence relate to?
Right realism, Rational choice, Situational crime prevention strategies
What is meant by public protection?
Protecting the public from future crimes by an offender
What are the 6 types of public protection that can be used?
Execution, cutting off hands, chemical castration, banishment, foreign travel bans, curfews and electronic tagging

mandatory minimum jail sentences for repeat offenders, automatic life sentences for a second serious sexual or violent offence, 7 years for a third class A drug trafficking offence and 3 years for 3rd burglary conviction
