Crick And Watson - DNA Flashcards
What is DNA?
DNA is the building blocks of life.
Who discovered DNA and when?
DNA was discovered by Crick In Watson in 1953.
What did they find?
Crick And Watson found that DNA houses genes.
What did that lead to?
It led to the ‘Human Genome Project’, mapping human genetic code.
What have they discovered since 1953?
Since 1953, they have discovered 4000 diseases that are linked to genes - a major breakthrough.
What was previously known?
Previously, people only knew that germs caused diseases.
What can faulty genes cause?
Faulty genes can cause cancer and high cholesterol.
Diseases?
Some diseases are hereditary e.g. Cystic Fibrosis. Sichel and Cell Anemia.
1/20?
1/20 children are born with a genetic disease.
What are scientists now able to do?
Scientists are now able to isolate some faulty genes - they can treat patients more effectively.
Engineering?
Genetic engineering has been developed to change genes.
What does this allow genes to do?
This allows genes to be instructed to correct some genetic defaults in a patient’s body,
What has been developed?
Insulin has now been developed to help treat and manage diabetes.
What problems are there?
There are moral, social and ethical problems with genetic engineering - Scientists and doctors, ‘Playing God’.
Test-Tube Babies?
Parents could choose the gender of their baby.
