Creativity Flashcards
What are the two function forms?
Form follows function (outside the box)
Function follows form (thinking inside the box)
What are the five templates for innovative inventions
- Subtraction
- Division
- Multiplication
- Task Unification
- Attribute dependency
What does SIT stand for?
Systematic Inventive thinking Its also the “inside the box” approach
What is an example of the subtraction method?
When Phillips created a remote for the dvd player that was really simple. Or the Sony walkman from a boom box
What is an example of The Task unification Method?
They created a back pack that helped your back the heavier it got.
What is an example of the multiplication method?
Inventing a new audio planning coach that helps teachers plan their lessons and to create a new web based approach to customer service.
What is an example of an Attribute dependency method?
smartphones that provide information about restaurants, locations of a nearby friend and shopping preferences. cars with windshield wipers that change speed according to the amount of rain.
What is an example of the division model?
Computers separate the ink cartridge for easy replacements.
What is the definition of the Subtraction method and what are the pros and cons?
When you have something removed usually that something was previously thought o be essential to the product or service, (taking the phone out of iPhone for Itouch)
cons: Not thinking about the new benefits, be clear and avoid replacing the new part immediately. Reluctant to pull most important things.
What is the definition of the Division method and what are the pros and cons?
When you take a component divided out of a product and place it somewhere else in the usage situation, usually ina way that seems unproductive or unworkable.
LIke remote controller, or air condition unit outside.
What is the definition of the Multiplication method and what are the pros and cons?
A component has been copied buy changed in some way, usually in a way that initally seemed unneccessary or odd. , like pictureu in picture, training wheels. Add two factors.
What is the definition of the task unification method and what are the pros and cons?
Some creative products and services, certain tasks have been brought together and unified within one component of the product or service. Usully a component that was previously thought to be unrelated to that task.
Lenovo latop and projector,
What is the definition of the Attribute dependency method and what are the pros and cons?
Two or more attributes that previously seemed unrealted now correlate with one another. as one thing changes something else changes. Adapts to the circustance. toilet that has an automatic flush.
What is the defintion of a template
Is a pattern consciouly used over and over to achieve resultsts that as new and unconventional as those you obtained the first time you used it.
How does function follow form work?
You think of an abstract conceptual solution and then work back to the problem it solves.
What is an example of the function follow form?
Having a color changing bottle, then thinking of what problem. it could solve. Take a solution (form then find a function for it)
What does it mean youre in a closed world?
When you are using the prodcut, the items the resources around the product when its being used.
Venkatesh and Davis—What Consumers Value in New Products
Studied consumer response to new technology—found empirical support for Functionality Ease of Use Subjective Norms Compatibility
What does Form follow function mean?
Form Follows Function
(Thinking Outside the Box)
Pain Points/Bug Lists
Focused Brainstorming / Solution Generation
What does function follow form mean?
Function Follow Form (Thinking Inside the Box) Closed World Enumeration (Components + Relevant Items) Focused Discussion / Solution Generation Subtraction Multiplication Division Task Unification Attribute Dependence
What a re the three methods of division?
Functional (Rearrange an exsiting companent)
Physical (Cut the prdouct or one of its components along any physical line)
Preserving (divide the product or service into smaller pieces)
