Creation Flashcards
What is creation
The act through which God made the universe which is told in Genesis
What is the creation Of Adam
- A painting made by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel in Rome
- It display Adam lazily pointing out to Jesus and the angels
What does The creation of Adam show
- God and Adam both look equally powerful and are in similar positions, links back to bible teaching that humanity is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27)
- God being carried shows that God is transcendent (beyond and outside life on earth and the universe)
- Adam is shown as the perfect man full of strength and potential, reflects that God mad everything “very good”(Genesis 1:31(NRSV))
What two ways does the creation of Adam go against Catholic teaching
- Genesis 2:7 says that Go brought Adam to life by breathing into his nostrils, rather than touching him
- God and Adam are similar sizes, go against catholic teaching that says God is almighty and higher than Adam
What is the Hand of god
An early 20th century Mosaic created by Hildreth Meiere
What does The hand of God show
- Lines extending from God’s hand to the edge of the circle (which depict the edge of the universe), Reflects the idea that God created everything in the universe, and that his influence and power touch all things
- Gods hand is large compared to the size of the cloud, helps to show gods greatness and power
How is gods nature shown in the creation of Adam and the hand of god
- God is shown as an old man, some Christians believe this is to show how he is eternal
- Only gods hand is shown, some Christians think that this is a symbol of Gods creative power is a more acceptable way of showing God as infinite
How is gods role in the creation of Adam and the hand of god
- Creation of Adam focuses on the act of God creating humanity, so it conveys more about the relationship between God and Humanity
- The mosaic is more abstract, it conveys a greater sense that god is always creating everything but shows less about gods relationship with humanity
What does genesis 1 describe
describes gods creation of the universe, it tells us how god created it over 6 days using the power of his words to bring things to life
How does genesis describe god as the creator
- God is the only creator, who has created everything
- this is significant for Christians because it means they should worship only this one god
- all of creation is special as god created it, show we should care for and look after
How does genesis describe god as the omnipotent
- God has the power to do what ever he wants, he can create things from nothing
- Belief in Gods omnipotence inspires Christians to trust in god, as they know he has the power to do or change anything
How does genesis describe god as the transcendent
- God only needs his own words to create, whatever he says happens, god is completely above and beyond the created world
- The idea of transcendence also means god is beyond human understanding, Christians believe god cannot fully be described in human words, or fully understood by human minds
- Gods transcendence inspires awe
How does genesis 2 describe humans being given free will
- it describes how god made the garden of Eden for Adam to live in
- god tells Adam that he may eat from any tree in the garden except for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
How are we taught to look after the world (bible teaching)
In genesis 2:15, God puts Adam in the garden of Eden to ‘till it and keep it’
What is a bible teaching on stewardship
“This responsibility for god’s earth means that human beings must respect the las of nature and the delicate [balance] existing between the creatures of this world” Laudato Si 68
