Q

State some things that can be observed about Michelangelo’s “The creation of Adam”

A

Adam has a small penis, God has his finger on a cherubim’s neck, Adam’s naked, God’s touching Adam’s finger with his right hand, God’s hand is above Adam’s, the veil is shaped like a brain, it isn’t biblically accurate.

Q

Explain some of the observations of “The creation of Adam”

A

Adam hasn’t eaten the apple yet because he’s naked; God has power over man because his hand is higher than Adam’s; God’s inside a brain-shaped veil, showing his omniscience as he’s inside the human brain.

Q

What is the role of humans in creation in Genesis 2?

A

They were given dominion over the animals and the planet, and as such are called to be stewards. “So out of the ground the Lord God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.” - Genesis 2:19

Q

Describe the role of human free will in Genesis 2.

A

Adam and Eve were allowed to eat from any tree in the garden except from the tree of knowledge and, after eating from it, became aware of their own nakedness. God gave humans free will but, as a punishment of misusing it, have to experience pain, sickness and death.

Q

How do the creation stories influence Catholic belief on the sanctity of life?

A

God blessed his creation so it should be treated with care and respect. ‘God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’ - Genesis 1:28.

Q

How do the creation stories influence Catholic belief on the dignity of humans?

A

Everyone was created in the image (likeness) of God, and as such should all be treated with an inherent respect. “So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” As God gave us all free will, our use of it (our opinions) should be respected.

Q

How do the creation stories influence Catholic belief on stewardship?

A

God created everything so we should respect and care for his creation. He also gave us dominion over all the animals and the world, and as such should look after it/them. ‘Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”’

Q

How do the creation stories influence Catholic belief on the work of CAFOD?

A

CAFOD aims to promote sustainability to the people of England and Wales (and probably elsewhere). This is because we are called to look after our environment and be good stewards.

How do the creation stories influence Catholic belief on sustainability?

A

We are called to have dominion over the world, and as such should keep it in a good state, sustainability being the whole world working in balance and an integral part of keeping dominion over the planet.

What are the 5 main precepts of natural law?

A

Q

What is the Catholic Church’s view on science?

A

The magisterium have said that Christianity and science are mutually supportive. E.g. Georges Lemaitre devised a big bang model, and Friar Gregor Mendel pioneered genetics. “If methodical investigation is carried out in a genuinely scientific manner, it never truly conflicts with faith.” - Gaudium et Spes 36

17
Q

How is the bible divided up?

A

There are 73 books in a Catholic bible, 46 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament.
OT: Law (genesis, exodus etc.), history (Joshua, judges etc.), wisdom (job, psalms etc.), and prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah).
NT: Gospels (Matthew, Mark etc.), Acts of the Apostles (acts), epistles (Romans, Corinthians etc.), and revelations.

18
Q

What is inspiration?

A

The guidance that God gives to people, like the writers of the bible. This means that the bible wasn’t written directly as God intended because God didn’t say the entire bible, but it was interpreted by humans.

19
Q

What is the magisterium?

A

The teaching authority of the Church, exercised by the Pope and bishops.
