Second Continental Congress (1775)

A

Lasts through the entirety of the war. Starting in July. The Olive Branch Petition begs the king to let them stay as colonists. The king doesn’t even read it and declares them in rebellion. The Declaration of Independence was written. It was made so that all could sign it, Christian or not.

Key Moments of the Revolution (4)

  1. 1776- Washington crosses the Delaware. The first major victory. A surprise attack on the British, win the battle of Trenton
  2. Valley Forge. A winter with no supplies. Cold. Soldiers get trained, disciplined. The American army becomes strong and ready to fight.
  3. 1778- Saratoga N. York. Victory! The French are impressed, and want Canada, so decided to help.
  4. Victory at Yorktown. Now first place not run by king since Rome!

A

Planter from Virginia with an estate. Respected. Wanted to be like the Romans: humble.
He establishes what the presidency will look like: Mr. President not Majesty. Resigns after 2nd term, sets precedent.

A

Democratic Republican. Wanted a small government. Anything not explicitly in the constitution belongs to the states. The Louisiana Purchase from France!!

The Constitution

A

The Articles of Confederation= bad. Constitutional Convention. Write constitution. THE GREAT COMPROMISE: Legislative branch will have two houses- one with proportional state representation (house of representatives) , and one with equal representation (Senate).
3/5 COMPROMISE: Black people only counted as 3/5 of a person when calculating population for representation.
