Nixon
Richard Nixon. 1968. He shifts to the right politically (republican). Law and order–he appeals to those who disapprove of hippies. He is paranoid about conspiracies.
Decides to deescalate in Vietnam, instead bombing Laos and Cambodia where Vietnam had supply routes to Vietnam. It doesn’t work. 1973, Peace Accords–say we lose.
Nixon- Detente
Means pause. Nixon meets with Mao and makes an agreement to limit ABM’s.
The Helsinki Accords recognized all borders established in WWII
Nixon- Watergate
Watergate= hotel with offices, held the Democratic National Committee office–they were working on the next election (trying to unseat Nixon). Police arrest men trying to set bugging equipment in DNC office. They were sent by the Nixon administration (the CREEP) Nixon blackmailed using campaign money. Nixon resigns before impeachment.
Carter
Governor of Georgia, peanut farmer, evangelical Christian. Democrat. “Anti-Nixon” Trustworthy. NO foreign policy experience. Economic problems. Stagflation (inflation and unemployment/stagnation) Partly because of oil embargo. High prices and interest rates.
Reagan
Hollywood, gov. of California. Republican. Seperated himself from Nixon. “Peace through strength.” Wins in a landslide.
Reaganomics: Supply side economics–tax cuts for wealthy. Tons of military spending, raises debt. Called the “cold warrior.” Extremely against communism. Not just contain, but help anyone who ifghts it.
Reagan- Star wars
Strategic Defense Initiative–Reagan says that we have a laser to shoot down missiles. We don’t… He’s bluffing! The Soviet Union believes him and makes their own and go bankrupt.
Gorbachev
Reagan works with him.
He is younger than other Soviet leaders. communist, but believes that people shoul have rights: freedom of press, cultural exchange. Simplifies beuracracy. Now everyone can say what’s not working in the SU.
Collapse of the USSR
Gorbachev is blamed for the collapse, though he was trying to save the USSR. Small countries begin to gain independence. People are speaking out. It ends on Christmas day, 1991. Now the US is the only superpower.
Six Day War
1967- Israel wants the Sinai Peninsula (part of Egypt). Israel attacks and wins. They also take the Gaza strip and West Bank–originally Palestine. SU supports Palestine and the West supports Israel–proxy war.
Yom Kippur War
1973- Egypt/Syria attack Israel to get land back. Israel wins. US is demonized by Arabs for helping–think the west is interfering and colonizing.
