Create A Strategic Plan Flashcards
Tell me about a time when you had to create a plan to implement a complex organizational Strategy.
Explain how you approaced the plan.
Hard Surface Testing Expansion for Resilient
RESILIENT Flooring
Our move into resilient meant that Central Lab had to start modify the Hard Surface Lab. So I developed answers to WHO, What, and Where question to develop a preliminary Cost - Benifit Analysis.
We did have some available space to buy us sometime
To determine tests needed. we held meetings with Quality, Resilient Technical and R&D, and Product Managers
Obtained quotes for equipment and lab changes to accommodate need space.
Within a half year we were providing essential testing for Resilient and other Hard Surfaces.
Who would staff and manage the testing Lab
Descrie an example when you were too focused on short-term outcomes and missed the potential risk of your actions or plan could have long term results
Scanning Electron Microscope installation in downstairs conference room
Scanning Electron Microscope
Situation Obtained a Scanning Electon Microscope from Honeywell acquisition.
Decided to locate the unit in small downstairs conference room because it met the cirteria for installation. We had no room in the lab.
Action Later we had the opportunity to move labs around and I design a microscopy lab upstairs for the SEM. We installed it and it work well
Results In retrospect we might have been able to locate the SEM in the lab and just see if it would run properly regardless of the installation literature.
Describe a time when you recommended a plan of action in response to business / market trends. How did you come up with this plan
Accellerate the Number of POD Available
Situaltion The Technical Director of Hard Surface / Resilient Told me that it was his highest priority to have at least 5 or more POD to test new product for dimensional stability.
Action I conducted a Plant 1 and 3 site review to find options for the PODs.
Found a space temporary space Plant 1. I contacted contractors, reviewed layouts, and started work.
Results
Within 2 months I had 5 PODs up and running. The PODs were so successful we planed a removal of all the office space and build a 12 POD room to improve turn time and hold reviews.
Tell me about a time when you had to translate the oranization’s vision into a practical action plan. What steps did you take?
Reduce Outside Testing
Task Situation - Company wants to do as little outside testing as possible, with no increase in manning.
Action Conducted a cost vs benifit analysis
Made a list of testing that we could easily do inside and other testing that would require new equipement.
Formed a team to rank the test that we could do quickly at no cost and others that would require new equipment. Some testing would be dropped and others would be sent back to plant labs because the were process checks.
Results - we restructured our offerings based on customer value to the company and found that we had faster response. With no increase in labor force.
What Strategies have you employed to ensure a major new directive from senior management was carried out? Which strategies worked and which did not? Give me and example.
Bring Testing Inside to provide improve turn time and cost as well as accurracy.

stratgies that did not work well
Focusing too much on available historical datat does not predict the future
We need to focus as much on the future needs as we did on current needs. we would have been looking into Plant 1 space earlier.
This study made us be bold in our Capital Budgeting for each year doubling our ask 3 fold each year for the past 6 years.
