Cranial Nuclei 2 Flashcards
Which cranial nuclei does CN III synapse in?
Edinga-Westphall (visceral motor) in rostral midbrain - ANS supply of eye (ciliary and pupillary muscles)
Oculomotor (somatic motor) in rostral midbrain - voluntary movements of oculomotor muscles (except lateral recti & superior oblique)
Which nuclei does CN IV synapse in?
Trochlear (somatic motor) in caudal midbrain
Which nuclei does VI synapse in?
Abducens (somatic motor) in caudal pons
Which nuclei does VII synapse in?
Somatic sensory / trigeminal nucleus (somatic sensory) - in all brainstem
Solitary (visceral sensory) - in medulla and caudal pons
Superior and inferior salvitory (visceral motor) - in caudal pons and rostral medulla
Facial motor (brachial motor) in caudal pons
Which nuclei does VIII synapse in?
cochlear (special sensory) in rostral pons
vestibular (special sensory) in caudal pons

Ambiguus (brachial motor) in rostral medulla
which nuclei does XII synapse in?
hypoglossal (somatic motor) in rostral medulla
describe the somatic sensory nucleus
also known as the trigeminal system.
somatic sensory fibre types.
covers entire brainstem
4 nerves: CV trigeminal CVII facial CIX glossopharyngeal CX vagus
3 subnuclei:
