Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What is the I cranial nerve?
Olfactory (I)
What is the II cranial nerve?
Optic (II)
What is the III cranial nerve?
Oculomotor (III)
What is the IV cranial nerve?
Trochlear (IV)
What is the V cranial nerve?
Trigeminal (V)
What is the VI cranial nerve?
Abducens (VI)
What is the VII cranial nerve?
Facial (VII)
What is the IX cranial nerve?
Glossopharyngeal (IX)
What is the X cranial nerve?
Vagus (X)
What is the XI cranial nerve?
Accessory (XI)
What is the XII cranial nerve?
Hypoglossal (XII)
What is the mneumonic for remembering the function of the cranial nerves?
Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says Big Boobs/Brains Matter More
What is the function of the I (1) cranial nerve?
Sensory (Some) - Olfactory
Smell
What is the function of the II (2) cranial nerve?
Sensory (Say) - Optic
Sight
What is the function of the III (3) cranial nerve?
Motor (Marry) - Oculomotor
Eye movement (MR, IO, SR, IR)
Pupil constriction
Accommodation
Eyelid opening
What is the clinical presentation of a lesion to the III (3) cranial nerve?
Facial nerve palsy
Prostitute Eye - (3)
Ptosis (Hooded Lid)
‘Down and Out’ Eye
Dilated, fixed pupil
What is the function of the IV (4) cranial nerve?
Motor (Money) - Trochlear
Eye movement (SO)
What is the clinical presentation of a lesion to the IV (4) cranial nerve?
Defective downwards gaze –> Vertical diplopia
What is the function of the V (5) cranial nerve?
Both (But) - Trigeminal
Facial sensation
Mastication
What is the clinical presentation of a lesion to the V (5) cranial nerve?
Trigeminal - Legion may cause: TRIGEMINAL neuralgia Loss of corneal reflex (afferent) Loss of facial sensation Paralysis of mastication muscles Deviation of jaw to weak side
What is the function of the VI (6) cranial nerve?
Motor (My) - Abducens
Eye movement (LR)
What is the clinical presentation of a lesion to the VI (6) cranial nerve?
Defective abduction –> Horizontal diplopia
What is the function of the VII (7) cranial nerve?
Both (Brother) - Facial
Facial movement
Taste (Anterior 2/3 of tongue)
Lacrimation
Salivation
What is the clinical presentation of a lesion to the VII (7) cranial nerve?
Lesions may result in: Flaccid paralysis of the upper + lower face (LMN - no forehead sparing) Loss of corneal reflex (efferent) Loss of taste Hyperacusis (painful sounds)
