What are the causes of brain abscesses?
A
Extension of sepsis from ear or sinuses
Trauma or surgery to the scalp
Penetrating head injuries
Embolic events from endocarditis

What are the features of brain abscess?
A
Depending on site (e.g. cortex present sooner)
Considerable mass effect, raised ICP common.
Fever, headache and focal neurology.
(Not typical swinging pyrexia)

A
CT Scan Head

What is the management of a brain abscess?
A
Surgery: Craniotomy, drainage and debridement.
Antibiotics: Cephalosporin and Metronidazole
ICP management: Dexamethasone
