Cranial Nerves Flashcards
ID Structure. Which nerve and other body passes through this structure
A - Cribiform plate of the Ethmoid Bone B - Crista Galli of the Ethmoid Bone; The Cribiform plate of the ethmoid bone has the Olfactory nerve (CN I ) passing through it.
ID Structure (A) . Which Nerve and other vessels passes through it?
A - The Optic Canal of the Sphenoid Bone, the Optic Nerve (CN II) and the Ophthalmic Artery passes through here
ID Structure (B) What vessels pass through this?
B - Anterior Clinoid Process of the sphenoid bone; No vessels or nerves pass through here, but together with the posterior clinoid process of the sphenoid bone serve to deepen the hypophyseal fossa of the sphenoid bone and serve as a point of attachment for the tentorium cerebelli
ID Structure (C) . What is its function?
C- Foramen Spinosum of the sphenoid bone; the middle meningeal artery passes through here
ID Structure (D). What is it’s function?
D - Posterior Clinoid Process of the sphenoid bone; is responsible, along with the inferior process of the sphenoid bone of deepening the hypophyseal fossa and serves as a site for attachment of the tentorium cerebelli
ID structure E. What is its function
Foramen Ovale of the sphenoid bone; responsible for allowing the Mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve CN (V) to pass through
ID Structure B : What components are associated with this structure?
B - Superior Orbital Fissure of the Sphenoid Bone; the oculomotor nerve (CN III); the trochlear nerve CN IV; and the opthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve (CN V), and the abducens nerve CN VI
ID Structure (E) : What vessels pass through?
E - Jugular foramen of the petrous region of the temporal bone glossopharyngeal nerve IX, vagus nerve X, spinal motor component of the accessory nerve XI, and the internal jugular vein.
ID Structure E: what passes through this
E- Foramen Lacerum of the sphenoid bone; filled with fibrocartilage in the living skull
ID Structure F: What vessels are associated with it?
Carotid canal of the Petrous region of the temporal bone; houses the internal carotid artery
ID Structure (E) : What is its function?
Jugular foramen of the petrous region of the temporal bone; houses the glossopharyngeal nerve CN IX, the vagus nerve CN X and the Accessory nerve CN XI (spinal motor component and the cranial motor component), and the internal jugular vein
ID Structure H: what is its function?
Internal acoustic meatus of the petrous region of the temporal bone; houses (entering the skull) the vestibulocochlear nerve CN VIII, the Facial Nerve CN VII
ID structure G: what passes through it?
G is the foramen magnum of the occipital bone; (R/L vertebral arteries, the spinal motor component of CN XI, and is a landmark division between the medulla oblongata and the spinal cord of the central nervous system.
ID Structure: D and function
D - the hypoglossal canal of the occipital bone; houses the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) and the ascending pharyngeal artery
