Facial Nerve (CN VII)
Mixed Nerve
Motor to muscles of facial expression, taste to anterior two-thirds of tongue, motor to glands that produce tears, mucus and saliva. Sensory to part of face and mouth
Oculomotor Nerve (CN III)
Motor nerve
Innervates four of six extrinsic eye muscles, elevates eyelid, constricts pupils, rounds lens of eye
Hypoglossal Nerve (CN XII)
Motor nerve
Intrinsic and extrinsic tongue muscles
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN IX)
Mixed nerve
Sensory and taste to posterior tongue, sensory to part of pharynx and others, stylopharyngeus muscle, secretions from parotid gland
Trigeminal Nerve (CN V)
Mixed nerve
Sensory from anterior scalp, face, oral cavity, and others, muscles of mastication and others
Olfactory Nerve (CN I)
Sensory nerve
Provides for sense of smell
Vagus Nerve (CN X)
Mixed nerve
- Visceral sensory from heart, lungs, and abdominal organs
- General sensory from part of pharynx, larynx, others
- Most pharyngeal and all laryngeal muscles
- Smooth muscles and glands of heart, lungs, larynx, and most abdominal organs
Trochlear Nerve (CN IV)
Motor Nerve
Innervates superior oblique eye muscle
Accessory Nerve (CN XI)
Motor nerve
Innervates trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscle, has a cranial and spinal component
Optic Nerve (CN II)
Sensory Nerve
Provides for sense for sense of vision
Vestibulocochlear Nerve (CN VIII)
Sensory Nerve
Provides for senses of hearing and balance
Abducens Nerve (CN VI)
Motor Nerve
Innervates lateral rectus eye muscle
