Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What nerves are parasympathetic?
CN III, VII, IX, X
Functional component related with smell or taste?
SVA
Think: when you’re sick and can’t smell properly, food doesn’t taste the same
Functional component related with vision, hearing and balance?
SSA
Functional component related with parasympathetic NS?
GVE
Horners syndrome causes and effect:
= loss of sympathetic innervation of the head. Effects: Horner’s syndrome, loss of sympathetic innervation in the head, will cause ptosis, or a drooping eyelid, along with a constricted pupil and a flushed, dry face on the affected side.
Nerves that go through the superior orbital fissure:
CN III, IV, V1, VI
Functional component related with general somatic motor innervation
GSE
Six extra-ocular muscles/cranial nerves:
LR6 (SO4) 3 ….
LR6 = CN VI, Lateral Rectus Muscle
SO4 = CN IV, Superior Oblique
Rest done by CN III: Levator palpebrae superiors, Superior rectus muscles, inferior rectus muscle, inferior oblique muscles,
General Girl Scouts of America
GSA, general somatic afferent, V carries info back to brain
Muscles of mastication:
temporalis, masseter, medial and lateral pterygoids
n: V3 (mandibular branch of trigeminal)
Muscles of oral floor:
mylohyoid, anterior digastric
n: V3 (mandibular branch of trigeminal)
Corneal Relfex:
Trigeminal V1 (opthalmic division); Afferents corneal reflex, blink with eye touch
Inferior Alveolar N
Part of V3 (mandibular), INTO-enters the mandibular foramen, travels through the mandibular canal, exits through the mental foramen to become the mental n.
Lingual N
Part of V3 (mandibular), UNDER, the mandible to innervate the touch, 2/3 anterior part of TOUCH
What components of CN V carry parasympathetic fibers?
V1- carries fibers from ciliary ganglion
V2- carries fibers from the pterygopalantine ganglion
V3- carries fibers from the submandibular and optic ganglion
