Cranial nerves Flashcards
Learning the cranial nerves and their function
What is the 1st cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Olfactory nerve; sense of smell; sensory.
What is the 2nd cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Optic nerve; vision; sensory.
What is the 3rd cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Oculomotor nerve; controls most eye movements, pupil constriction, and eyelid elevation; motor.
What is the 4th cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Trochlear nerve; controls the superior oblique muscle for eye movement (downward and inward); motor.
What is the 5th cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Trigeminal nerve; sensation in the face and motor control of chewing; both.
What is the 6th cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Abducens nerve; controls the lateral rectus muscle for outward gaze; motor.
What is the 7th cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Facial nerve; controls facial expressions, taste (anterior two-thirds of tongue), and salivary glands; both.
What is the 8th cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Vestibulocochlear nerve; hearing and balance; sensory.
What is the 9th cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Glossopharyngeal nerve; taste (posterior one-third of tongue), swallowing, and salivation; both.
What is the 10th cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Vagus nerve; controls autonomic functions of the heart, lungs, and digestive tract; sensation in the throat and voice box; both.
What is the 11th cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Accessory nerve; controls muscles used in head movement (sternocleidomastoid and trapezius); motor.
What is the 12th cranial nerve, its function, and is it sensory, motor, or both?
Hypoglossal nerve; controls tongue movement; motor.
