Cranial Nerves Flashcards
CN I:
OLFACTORY- sensory*, SMELL
Fibers → olfactory bulb → olfactory tract → olfactory cortex
CN II:
OPTIC - sensory*, VISION
Retina → optic nerve → optic chiasm → optic tract → thalamus → visual cortex
CN III:
OCULOMOTOR - motor*, EYE MOVEMENT
(4 of 6 extrinsic eye muscles + eyelid/pupil)
CN IV:
TROCHLEAR: motor*, superior oblique muscle
“Trochlea” = pulley/hook in eye socket
CN V:
TRIGEMINAL: both*, FACIAL SENSATION & CHEWING
Largest/most fibers with 3 DIVISIONS:
1. Ophthalmic (top) - sensory
2. Maxillary - sensory
3. Mandibular: both
CN VI:
ABDUCENS: motor*, EYE
“Abducts” lateral rectus muscle
CN VII:
FACIAL: both* - motor : face, “making faces”, ANS : glands in face, sensory: ant. 2/3 of tongue
5 branches
CN VIII:
VESTIBULOCOCHLEAR: sensory*, hearing & equilibrium
Inner ear → medulla/pons
CN IX:
GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL: both* - motor: to pharynx, ANS: salivary glands, sensory: post. 1/3 of tongue & pharynx
CN X:
VAGUS: both* - motor: to larynx & pharynx, ANS: to viscera, sensory: from viscera
“Wandering nerve”
CN XI:
ACCESSORY: motor* - moves SCM & Traps
Cervical spine → up spinal cord into skull → back down into neck
“NECKlace as an accessory”
CN XII:
HYPOGLOSSAL: motor*, TONGUE
Medulla ⟺ tongue
