smell
- Close eyes and place notable scent under nose
Optic
vision
- close one eye at a time and read something at a distance and up close
Oculomotor
muscles of eye
- pen light in up and down motion
Trochlear
muscles of eye
- pen light in a diagonal motion
Trigeminal
Sensory: face area
Motor: chewing muscles
- have patient bite down on tongue depressors and have them open and close mouth and move mouth laterally OR can see if they have sensation by brushing both of their cheeks
Abducens
muscles of eye
- pen light in a side to side motion
Facial
Sensory: tongue area
Motor: muscles of facial expression
- tell patient to raise eyebrows, squint, protrude lips, and smile
Vestibulocochlear (auditory)
Hearing equilibrium sensation
- have patient close their eyes and have them audibly identify noise in their ear (claps); while eyes are closed, have them balance on one leg for 10 seconds
Glossopharyngeal
Sensory: taste, pharynx, middle ear
Motor: muscles of pharynx
- tell patient to swallow saliva and assess ease/difficulty
Vagus
Sensory: heart, lungs, GI tract
Motor: heart, lungs, GI tract
- assess by having patient speak a sentence
Spinal accessory
Sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
- have patient shrug shoulders and push down and have them resist
Hypoglossal
muscles of tongue
- have patient stick out tongue
