what do cranial nerves supply?
they supply special senses e.g. taste
CNI (first cranial nerve) =
Olfactory nerve = special sense, carries information related to smell
CNII (2nd) =
optic nerve - vision
CNIII (3rd) =
Oculomotor nerve - somatic division controls movement of eye, autonomic division is motor to pupil contrition
CNIV (4th) =
Trochlear - motor that moves muscles in the eye
CNV (5th) =
Trigeminal nerve - touch on the face (dermatomes), muscles of mastication (myotomes)
CNVI (6th) =
Abducent - somatic muscle of the eye
CNVII (7th) =
Facial Nerve - taste from anterior tongue and palate
CNVIII (8th) =
Vestibulocochlear nerve - hearing
CNIX (9th) =
glossopharyngeal nerve - taste from posterior tongue
CNX (10th) =
vagus nerve - called the wandering nerve as it supplies structures beyond the head
CNXI (11th) =
accessory nerve - motor to two big muscles in the neck
CNXII (12th) =
motor to the muscles of the tongue
