Motor - external/lateral rectus muscle (voluntary eye movements; moves eye laterally)
Facial (VII)
Sensory - anterior 2/3 of tongue
Motor - muscles of face
Vestibulocochlear (VIII)
Sensory - inner ear (vestibular branch - balance; cochlear branch - hearing sounds)
Glossopharygneal (IX)
Sensory - posterior 1/3 of tongue, tonsil, pharynx, eardrum
Motor - pharyngeal musculature (sylopharyngeus muscle: swallowing) & parotid salivary glands
Vagus (X)
Sensory - internal organs of thoracic & abdominal cavities (heart, lungs, bronchi, trachae, larynx, GI tract, diaphragm); pharynx; external ear (external acoustic meatus)
Motor - heart, lungs, bronchi, GI tract (autonomic motor fibers to internal organs); palate & pharynx (motor fibers)
Accessory (XI)
Motor - sternocleidomastoid & trapezius
originates from spinal cord
Hypoglossal (XII)
Motor - muscles of tongue
