What are the cranial nerves?
Nerves which innervate structures in the head.
What is the type and function of the I oflacatory nerve?
Sensory, sensing smells.
What is the type and function of the II optic nerve?
Sensory, vision.
What is the type and function of the III oculomotor nerve?
Motor, eyelid and eyeball movement, pupil.
What is the type and function of the IV trochlear nerve?
Motor, oblique eyeball movement (downwards).
What is the type and function of the V trigeminal nerve?
Combined (sensori-motor), sensations from face
(three divisions), chewing.
What is the type and function of the VI abducens nerve?
Motor, eyeball movement, lateral gaze.
What is the type and function of the VII facial nerve?
Sensori-motor, motor: saliva glands, tears, facial expressions, sensations: taste.
What is the type and function of the VIII vestibulocochlear nerve?
Sensory, vestibular and auditory sensations.
What is the type and function of the IX glosopharyngeal nerve?
Sensory, taste, senses carotid blood
pressure. (carotid artery on the sides of the neck)
What is the type and function of the X vagus nerve?
Combined, taste, senses aortic blood pressure,
controls heart rate/breathing, larynx/pharinx, internal organs. (the aorta is the biggest artery)
What is the type and function of the XI accessory nerve?
Motor, neck movements, swallowing (larynx).
What is the type and function of the XII hypoglossal nerve?
Motor, tongue movements.
