Darken room is best

Pupillary response - comments on size and shape of pupils

How do you test the occulomotor nerve?
Inspect eyes, looking for ppil abnormality, presence of ptosis or any abnormality of gaze
Eye movements - H pattern
Ask abot doble vision and look for nystagmus
Probably good to mention to the examiner that you are testing nerves 3,4 and 6
How to test trigeminal?
Sensation - both cotton wool and tip
Motor - masseter and pterygoid muscles
Corneal reflex
Jaw reflex
How to test facial nerve?
Inspect: assymetry
Motor: wrinkle forehead, screw up eyes, smile and show teeth
Any change in taste?
Vestibulocochlear nerve
Check for nystagmus
Check balance - gait - perhaps do heel-toe or romberg?
Hearing - whisper test, rinnes and webers
What does the glossopharyngeal muscle innervate?
Sensation from pharynx and tonsils
Sensation and taste from the posterior 1/3 of tongue
Stylopharyngeus muscles
What does the vagus nerve innervate?
Sensation and innervates palentine, pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles
How to assess nerves 9 and 10?
Aah - symmetrical movement of palate? uvula central?
Cough - sounds normal?
Gag - look at reflex contraction of the pharyngeal muscles
How to test accessory nerve?
Shrug shoulders
Turn head
How to test hypoglossal nerve
Inspection of tongue - deviation, fasiculations, wasting
Motor - tongue side to side
