Cranial Nerve Tests Flashcards
CN I
Olfactory
test for smell (coffee beans)
CN II
optic
test for vision (hold up number on hand)
CN III
oculomotor
moves eyes up and down, pupillary constriction (shine light in eyes)
what is consensual light reflex?
thanks to optic nerve, the other eye will dilate when light is shone into other eye
Sing the cranial nerve mnemonic song
Oh factory smell and see (optic),
Oculomotor move your eyes
T- trochlear cross your eyes
T- Trigeminial hurts your face
A - Abducens give side eye
F - facial: face and taste
V - Vestibulocochlear
Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory
Hypoglossal helped us sing this song!
cranial nerve eye movement mnemonic
S are 4
L are 6
all the rest are three
Superior oblique – 4 – down and out
lateral rectus – 6 – give side eye
all the rest are 3 (superior and inferior rectus, medial rectus)
CNV
Test sensation in three branches
Can they clench jaw?
Afferent Corneal blinking reflex?!?
CNIV
crosseyed Down and in eye movement
CNVI
Give side eye
CNVII
Facial expression and anterior two thirds of tongue for taste Raise eyebrows Scrunch eyes Puff cheeks Forced frown Smile Have them taste something
what is it called when there is a disorder with CN VII?
Bell’s Palsy
Facial sensation is innervated by (___), but muscles of facial expression are innervated by (___)
CN5
CN7
CN VIII
vestibulococchlear
Hearing and balance
Stand behind them and make a sound in each ear
Close their eyes and see if they can balance
- Rinne test: - Activate vibration fork and put it on mastoid process. See if they can hear that. Ask them to tell you when it stops. And then move it in front of their ear and see if they can continue to hear it. Sound should be coming through air more than bone. Air conduction should be twice as long. When it’s on the mastoid process, they should be listening through bone, and then when you move it to the ear, they should hear it just as long from just air - Weber Test - on Du 20, you should be able to hear it equally in both ears - If there is conductive hearing loss, it will lateralize to the bad side - If its neuronal, it will - If it lateralizes to the conductive side, a person might need to have their ear looked at and cleaned out. Could be ear wax or a tumor
CN IX
glossopharyngeal
- Sensation to back of tongue and throat
- Parasympathetics to salivary gland
- Posterior 1/3 bitter taste
Test:
tongue depressor tests afferent GAG reflex;
test elevation of the soft palate, and deviation of the uvula
CN X
Vagus
- efferent gag reflex (can they do the gag or swallow reflex on their own?)
- diaphragm issues and acid reflux
