Cranial Nerve Disorders Flashcards
2 cranial nerve disorder prototypes
bells palsy
trigeminal neuralgia
what cranial nerve number for trigeminal neuralgia
5th (c area of the face)
what area of the 5th cranial nerve is involved in trigeminal neuralgia
sensory aspect
s/s of trigeminal neuralgia are similar to that of
headaches
the theory behind the patho of trigeminal neuralgia
compression of blood vessels causing chronic irritation of trigeminal nerve root, firing of sensory fibers
risk factors for trigeminal neuralgia
MS, HTN, teeth/jaw infection/abscess, hx of brain-stem infarct
s/s of trigeminal neuralgia
tics, unilateral facial sensory loss (temp)
is trigeminal neuralgia acute or chronic
chronic w/acute attacks described as horrible pain along side of face “C”
what triggers trigeminal neuralgia
air, ice packs, brushing your teeth, yawning, talking
is trigeminal neuralgia life threatening
no it is life altering but high incidence of suicide - keep pt. pain free
bells palsy affects this cranial nerve
7 - unilaterally
bells palsy is often miss-diagnosed as a
stroke
s/s of bells palsy
similar to stroke (facial droop unilaterally)
***herpes vesicles around the ears
tearing of the eyes
risk for corneal abrasion (sometimes can’t close eye)
what causes bells palsy
idiopathic
inactivated herpes virus
Lyme disease
child birth
