Cranial Nerve 6 Flashcards
What is another name for Cranial Nerve 6?
Abducens
What type of information does C.N.6 have: sensory, motor, or mixed?
Motor
What is the only muscle that C.N.6 supplies?
Lateral Recus
Where is the abducens nucleus located?
Caudal part of the pons, Floor of rhomboid fossa
What way do the axons from the abducens nucleus project?
Anteriorward
Where do the axons from the abducens nucleus exit the CNS?
At the inferior border of the pons
Abducens nucleus relieves information from what structures?
- Cerebral Cortex (BRDMN area 8)
- Sup. Colliculus
- MLF
What is the pathway of the abducens nucleus?
Penetrates the dura, travels along the cavernous sinus, exits the skull thru Sup. Orbit Fissure
What is a strabismus and what is the difference btwn an internal and an external strabismus?
Eyes are always looking a different direction; will never be able to focus in
Internal strabismus-deviates medially
External strabismus-deviates laterally
What is diplopia?
Double vision
What is difficult about diplopia?
It is subjective (no good way to test)
What is it called when you have unilateral eyelid droop?
Ptosis
What muscle is usually weak in ptosis?
Levator palpebrae superioris
What are the 3 things associated with external ophthalmoplegia?
1.External strabismus-diverges down and out
2.Diplopia
3.Ptosis
This is an oculomotor paralysis
What is involved with internal ophthalmoplegia?
- Inability to constrict pupil
2. Loss of light and accommodation reflexes
