Cranial and Facial Flashcards
Name the eight cranial bones.
There is one frontal bone, one occipital bone, two parietal bones, two temporal bones, one sphenoid bone, and one ethmoid bones.
Describe the difference between the crista galli and sella turcica.
The crista galli is located on the internal part of the frontal bone and is resembles a shark dorsal fin. The sella turcica is located on the shenoid bone and houses/protects the pituitary gland.
The orbit of the eye has several bones. Which is the smallest?
The smallest bone in the eye orbit is the lacrimal bone located on the medial aspect of the orbit.
Which suture separates the temporal bone from the parietal bone?
The squamous sutures separates the temporal bone from the parietal bone. There are two squamous sutures.
What is the only moveable joint in the skull and what are its articulating surfaces?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the only moveable joint in the skull. Its articulating structures are the condyloid process of the mandible and the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone.
List the motions of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
The motions of the TMJ are elevation and depression; protrusion and retrusion; and lateral deviation.
