Archimedes’ principle
Archimedes’ principle states that
when a body is totally or partially
submerged in a fluid, it experiences
an upthrust which is equal to the
weight of the fluid displaced.
At terminal velocity, occurs the weight
of the object is equal to
the drag
force. The resultant force is zero
and the acceleration is zero.
A couple consists
consists of two equal and opposite forces whose lines of action do
not coincide.
A couple tends to produce
rotation only
The torque of a couple is the
product of one of the forces and the
perpendicular distance between the forces.
Hooke’s law states
that the
extension produced is proportional
to the force applied, provided that
the elastic limit is not exceeded.
The spring constant k is defined as
.
the force acting per unit extension
Strain is defined as
form
the ratio of the
extension to the original length of
the material.
strain =
e/l
e – extension/m
l – original length/m
Strain is a ratio of lengths and has
no units
Young modulus (E) =
tensile stress/
tensile strain
stress is defined
as the force acting
per unit cross-sectional area.
F =
in motion in circle
mv2/r
F – centripetal force/N
m – mass/kg
v – velocity/ms–1
r – radius/m
Stress=
F/A
