What are Cranial Nerves?
Components of the peripheral nervous system that connect to the brain (not the spinal cord). Numbered according to their position along the longitudinal axis of the brain, beginning at the CEREBRUM.
Motor nuclei of these nerves lie in the brain stem of the Mid-Brain, Pons and Medulla. They are acted upon by nerve impulses from various sources.
Can be sensory, motor or mixed.
Swelling or bleeding within the meninges or brain can shift the brain and compress the openings.
