What are the stages of skills acquisition?
- Cognitive
- Associative
- Autonomous
What is the cognitive stage?
The initial learning of a new skill
What is the associative stage?
Learner has acquired the ides of what the skill is
What is the autonomous stage?
Skills come autonomatically
What is the nature of mistakes for cognitive stage?
Lots of inconsistencies and mistakes
What is the nature of feedback for the autonomous stage?
Kinesthetic sense is well developed thus, feedback is almost entirely internal
What is the nature of mistakes for associative stage?
Less errors, less frequently
- continuous improvement means less mistakes
What is the nature of mistakes for autonomous stage?
Rarely any mistakes
What is the nature of feedback for the cognitive stage?
ONLY external feedback → positive feedback from coach
- athlete is not receiving internal feedback
What is the nature of feedback for the associative stage?
Internal feedback + Kinesthetic sense
- Athletes start to understand and improve the movement whilst doing it thus, begins to associate their movement with a positive and negative outcome
What is training like for the associative stage?
Repetition comes from working on technicalities (e.g. timing, fluidity, sequencing)
What is training like for the autonomous stage?
Mimic pressurised games and competitive situations
