What are the sociocultural determinants affecting ATSI?
- ATSI have a long history of being oppressed and exploited (the effects of the stolen generation still impact many to this day)
- They are also subjected to racism and discrimination to this day → low self-esteem and poor mental health + high levels of psychological distress → risky methods to cope (e.g. excessive alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking → poor health outcomes
How do socio-economic determinants affect health for ATSI?
Low levels of education → unaware of health information on illnesses and preventative factors
Low income → less access to healthy food
What are intergenerational consequences for ATSI?
The negative impacts of sociocultural factors are also passed down from generation to generation

ATSI are half as likely to graduate from year 12 or attend tertiary education
What are the environmental determinants for ATSI?
- ATSI mainly live in rural or remote areas
- Poor housing and infrastructure
How does living in rural areas detriment the health of ATSI?
- Limited access to health care services and facilities, these areas have less medical clinics, doctors and nurses → reducing the opportunity for people to obtain treatment and care
- Employment opportunities in these areas are labour intensive → increasing injury
How does poor housing detriment the health of ATSI?
- Overcrowding → increased risk of respiratory illness or disease and communicable infections
- inadequate water, electricity and waste disposal

Individuals have the responsibility to access information and participate in health promotion activities → they should also implement this information

Must work together to promote better health

- Educate the community
- Provide support for members of the community
- Create awareness for health issues
- Cater for the community’s needs
- Focus on eliminating the inequities experience by the community
What is the role of governments in addressing health inequities for ATSI?
Responsible for creating health policies, as well as health initiatives specifically designed to improve the health of ATSIs
What are types of initiatives that the government can implement to improve the health of ATSIs?
Initiatives can be directly related through healthcare OR focused on improving factors that improve health
This can be achieved through improving;
- Housing
- Water
- Electricity
- Sewage
