CPM, Intermittent Compression, and Traction Flashcards
1
Q
Continuous Passive Motion (CPM)
A
-Electrical motorized devices that move joints through a preset partial PROM at a preset controlled speed
2
Q
Goal and usage of CPM
A
- Goal: To prevent or decrease the negative effects of immobilization
- Use: Post surgically
3
Q
CPM ROM benefits
A
- Promotes more natural alignment of collagen fibers
- Gaines ROM
- Helps with apprehension to ROM
- Decreases the need of manipulation following total knee replacement
- Assists in joint nutrition
- Assists in venous and lymphatic return (edema reduction)
4
Q
CPM TX Duration
A
- 1 hour 3 times a day
- 6-8 hours a day post surgery
5
Q
Intermittent Compression
A
-Mechanical pressure that encourages venous and lymphatic return from extremities.
6
Q
Circumferential Compression
A
-equal compression to all parts of the covered extremity
7
Q
Sequential Compression
A
-Compression that increases from distal to proximal through sequential filling of different pressure chambers.
8
Q
Physiologic Effects of Compression
A
- Decreased capillary hydrostatic pressure
- Causes increased reabsorption of interstitial fluids by lymphatic system
- Creates a second pressure gradient from high pressure to low pressure causing movement of fluid from distal to proximal
9
Q
Compression Application
A
- On/off ratio (duty cycle) = 3:1 (45 secs on/15 secs off)
- initial tx time usually 20-30 minutes
- Temp for cold units 50-60 degrees F
