CPAP Flashcards
1
Q
Indications for CPAP (1)
A
Patients presenting with cardiogenic pulmonary oedema and SOB that is severe or unresponsive to nitrates
2
Q
Contraindications for CPAP (7)
A
- Airway management (pts requiring)
- Life threatening arrhythmias
- Pneumothorax
- Hypoventilation
- Active vomiting
- GCS <13
- Facial trauma
3
Q
Clinical precautions for CPAP (2)
A
- Hypotension
- COPD- CPAP via flow safe not indicated for primary COPD mx. Pt in APO with COPD hx can be cautiously managed with this. Consider use of whisper flow device for COPD
4
Q
Equipment required (4)
A
- FlowSafe II device
- Suction device
- SpO2 monitor
- Oxygen
5
Q
What pressure of water is required? Typically how much O2 is needed for this?
A
- 10cmH20
- 12-14L/min
6
Q
Indications for removal of CPAP (9)
A
- Secretions (copious)
- Active vomiting
- Nil improvement after 1 hour of treatment
- Decreasing SpO2
- Cardiac/respiratory arrest
- HR <50 or SBP <90mmHg
- Intolerance(mask)/pt agitation
- Loss of airway control
- Loss of consciousness or GCS <13
7
Q
Prior to applying what level of O2 flow should be running through mask? and why?
A
- 8L/min
- Having flow of O2 through mask prior to application can reduce anxiety as it reduces sense of being smothered
